Nothing is Original

“The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.”
 ~Albert Einstein

Being a Graphic Designer, I take this to heart in everything I do. I’m a strong believer that nothing is created without some kind of inspiration.  It could be as simple as a color, shape, person or a word/thought when talking to someone or a group of people.  Good ideas don’t just come to you naturally with out any inspiration.  The example I like to use is Dr. C. Hunter Shelden, who had a neurological practice in Pasadena, California. He made a major contribution to the automotive industry in the 1950’s with his idea of retractable seat belts. This came about greatly in part from the high number of head injuries coming through emergency rooms. I feel if Dr. Shelden had not seen this high number of head injuries come through, he would not have made his retractable seat belts and help change the safety regulation in the automotive industry.

When it comes to my industry, I often go to websites like istockphoto.com, shutterstock.com and bigstockphoto.com to get resources or inspiration for my design.   I also have one major rule when I download ANY stock art; change it.  Even if it’s only 10% different from the original art. You cannot just download it and place it, which is not real design.  I can’t tell you how many times I see a billboard, poster, T-shirt, commercial or print ad where the designer just downloaded stock art and used it as is.  It’s even funnier when two different companies use the same stock art for two completely different ads.  I’m sorry to say but those designers bring shame to my industry.  “Copy and paste” is not design, and really not professional. With that said, I’m going to share some of my favorite places to get inspired and help my fellow designers break out of the iStock box.  Enjoy!

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE BASICS

The average person is exposed to about 250 ads per day. When you think about the way we use computers, smart phones and iPad devices – the number of impressions adds up. These days, advertising can be designed and placed so subtly, a person doesn’t even know that they are being exposed to a brand. Others take a more guerilla style approach. As a designer, it is fascinating to observe the various advertising design styles. As a graduate from the Art Institute, my instructors placed emphasis in learning the basics. When a designer is well versed in the basics of design such as, audience, layout, typography, imagery and color, he or she is guaranteed to be better prepared to utilize these basic skills for the demands of both traditional and digital design.

Today’s designer must take all of these basics into consideration when designing. For example, before you come up with ANY design you need to know the target audience. That is the only way to measure success.  Layout structure allows the designer to direct eye movement and hierarchy of content, i.e. what you what the target audience to see 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Typography choices give emotion and strength to your content. Imagery choices are important as well. We’ve all heard the cliché “A picture is worth a thousand words.” A designer can get a message across to its target audience without a single line of text. Color is the simplest way to get emotion. Proper use of basic color theory can help you decide what colors match, as well as what each color makes people feel. Psychologically, colors have meaning and the use of colors should always be purpose driven. Want to make people hungry? Look at all of the major brands who utilize red and yellow in their logos – colors that are proven to entice hunger.

Letizia Mass Media® takes the same approach in embracing “the basics” and utilizing them in adapting to the latest technologies. Our ultimate goal is to get the best results for our clients. That’s one of the many reasons why Letizia Mass Media® is a world-class brand that delivers superior marketing results with the • Power of Integrity • Power of Innovation • Power of Passion.

LIVING BUSINESS IN TODAY’S REALITY

We have had your many years of loyalty as our Big Traffic® division turns ten this year! This is a wonderful milestone in business.  In our ten years we have continued to grow our business. We survived not only the shocking devastation of 9/11, but also the stock market crash of 2008 and the “Great Recession.”  We now look back and realize these are now almost 3 years behind us.  We have all learned to live, work and bring continuity to our businesses in this new reality in which we all work.

This new reality is one of the prime reasons I am writing this today.  Ten years ago, in 2001, the global economy was only being forecast. Those of us in business still had not seen the effects of how events in other parts of the world could impact our local economy.  However, today, after 9/11, the events of the uprising in the Arab countries and the devastation in Japan, we all see how small the world has become.

Our concern is for gas prices rising above $4.25 per gallon.  When we started this business, diesel fuel was at $1.87 per gallon. Over the past 10 years we have absorbed the volatility of fuel prices as part of our cost of doing business.  Unfortunately, the quality of what we provide will be greatly sacrificed if we cannot ask you to share with us in this impact.  In order to continue to be the highest quality outdoor mobile provider in the country, we are instituting a fuel surcharge program.

As you know we have enjoyed a reputation of being the leader of this industry.  It is not only in the business of the business that we are leaders, it is in research, design, technologies and community contribution that we enjoy this reputation.  Over the next 10 years you can count on us to continue that leadership.

We do not intend to pass on this surcharge unless fuel flies over the $4.25 per gallon mark.  With each client paying a minimal surcharge, this all adds up to a great deal for us. We would like to believe that as we have been your valued partners in bringing you success throughout the years, that you will be our partner in allowing us this assistance should we face the worst fuel prices in world history in the coming months.

This, of course, will be voluntary per client in 2011 and we hope that you will say yes (as so many others have), to insure our ability to bring you the highest quality outdoor product with the best service in the community.  Feel free to call me directly with any questions.

TAKE A PLAY FROM THE ADVERTISING CONSULTANTS PLAYBOOK AND SCORE BIG

Today’s successful businessman is one who knows how to use the media in his favor. The successful operator is open to new ideas and yet, embraces traditional media with a proper mix with interactive. The successful business owner of today knows his customer, his product and his unique market. The successful business person of today is a marketer that utilizes strong consultants to see his plan through. There is no possible way that a business can be successful if that business does not understand some very fundamental marketing concepts.

It amazes me how many owners around the country don’t have a clue how they need to move their operation forward and meet the demands of today’s financial climate. On the other hand, there many operators that clearly understand what is required in today’s environment. For every entrepreneur, if you do not have a strategy – a plan – a few plays you can pull out of your play book, you are destined for failure.

So, if you have not found that media savvy person to help guide you, here are a few key areas where you need to focus in your pursuit to find that person:

1.    Hire an Advertising Consultant to give you direction. Advertising Consultant’s are experts in the business who can help you formulate a plan. A good Consultant has been up against situations with virtually every type of business, similar markets and market conditions. Your Consultant will help you develop a budget, analyze demographics and help you find advertising opportunities.  The days of simply calling the TV or radio station or a print rep are over, unless they have professional Advertising Consultants on staff. Additionally, a rep working at one particular media company will naturally show bias to his or her media company. An independent Advertising Consultant has no favorites or shows no bias in selection the proper media outlet for your company. This consultant will most likely make recommendations based on data available for all markets.

2.    Trust the people you hire. If you hire a professional and tell this professional how to do their job, you are wasting your money. If you do not have confidence in the recommendations of your consultant, you selected the wrong consultant. If you hire a consultant that finds it easier to agree with you, rather than challenging your decisions, you hired the wrong consultant.  My best and most successful clients are the ones that stay out of my way.

3.    Make a plan – stick with it. The biggest reason business owners fail is because, they don’t stay the course. Have you found yourself jumping from one media to another? Changing creative direction? Changing message? If you answered yes that is likely the reason you have been unsuccessful with your advertising. If you are confused as to which way you need to proceed, think about how you have confused potential buyers of your product or service. Stay with a campaign and alter with variations, it takes time for a message to penetrate into the minds of the consumer. Don’t attempt to tackle the intricate world of advertising without a proven, successful Advertising Consultant. Take a few plays out of the Advertising Consultant’s playbook and you are destined to score big.

Metro Video System

Metro Video Systems, a provider of cutting edge digital production and post production systems, provides expert guidance when designing a video production and finishing facility. Andrew Schneider, Sales Manager for Metro Video Systems states, “Letizia Mass Media® completely revamped their production workflow to be hi-definition capable. Our challenge was to create this new environment while leveraging their existing investment in equipment. Adding to the challenge was the fact that Letizia’s high volume of work would not allow for any interruption. Fortunately, we were able to accomplish this with minimal delays to their production pipeline.” As Sam Seegars, Production Manager for Letizia Mass Media® identifies, “We needed a partner that could take us to the next level with full HD shooting and editing. Metro was excellent in outlining a plan, giving us the best prices on gear and then hooking it all together with minimal disruption to our daily workflow. They are rock stars of professional video systems sales and installation.”

Pool Season

Fact:  It is impossible to diet when you are a media buyer. After the holidays, everyone is exercising and dieting getting ready for pool season, we’re fighting temptations from reps.  Why you ask?

First Quarter is the time when all of your media reps want to meet to go over plans and budgets for the year.  We set up appointments and no matter what time of the day our vendors will always bring goodies.  In the morning it’s bagels with cream cheese and Danishes.  All kinds of Danishes: raspberry, apple, and peach.  Who can turn down these appetizing goodies?  We always share with the office but they are hard to resist with that first, fresh cup of coffee.  If it’s in the afternoon, they bring assortment of freshly baked cookies.  Just what we need when we are in the 2pm crash, knowing you have hours left in your workday.

Many of our reps feel that going to the restaurant of our choice and enjoying the atmosphere makes us more susceptible to what they need to discuss. Oh my, our choice.  Well, we have lunch anywhere from sandwich shops to upscale, cloth napkin, beautifully decorated entrees on a plate that has more space than food.  Our favorites are the home-style restaurants, Italian, Mexican, and Chinese cuisine that once you get done eating you feel so full and uncomfortable it’s difficult to jump back into work and finish what you started two hours earlier.

The best or worst yet is drinks after work.  One drink could turn into two, three or more and even though you had a great time, nothing was accomplished.

Even though we truly appreciate the efforts of our reps and enjoy their company and what they have to offer, our figures would be much better off if we discussed these matters over the phone and via email.

Sincerely,

The Media Mavens

Overcoming Work Paralysis

Work paralysis is a little known ailment experienced by workers who, at one point or another, become so overwhelmed with the enormity of the tasks before them that they literally stop working altogether. I experienced this phenomenon myself only yesterday. In my case, the sudden stasis resulted from a need to recruit for 7 positions, schedule 17 interviews, fix four simultaneously occurring IT issues all while preparing for an executive level meeting for which I am the secretary. Oh, and I had a blog entry due! Being of a prioritizing nature, I immediately postponed the blog entry and handled everything else.

Now, it’s now, and my calendar just reminded me that my blog entry is due by close of business today. I confess to have forgotten all about it in the chaos of another busy work day, however, I am sure the blog police would hunt me down and arrest me if I begged for “one more extension.”

Today’s blog is about working through the chaos and paralysis. Even as I write this, I have been interrupted 3 times. I sat down to start at 12:56pm (on the dot) and it is now 1:11pm and all I have is 2.5 paragraphs. Inconceivable! So, what does one do to avoid work paralysis? In a working age where “multi-tasking” is the “term du jour” for busy, just how do we get things accomplished? That can all depend on the level at which you work. If you are a “worker bee,” you will have to learn to prioritize, organize and systematically go about your day in order to accomplish your tasks AND leave on time. If you are a manager, the same things apply AND you MIGHT get to leave on time. If, however, you are operating from the mountainous executive region, you will never get it done during business hours. Your sole purpose for existence is to be there to guide your staff and move the organization forward. This means that the tasks you have, will have to be done at night, in the morning, or in between helping others. It won’t end; you won’t get a break, and guess what else? That’s ok! This is the reality of today’s workplace.

When the economy was tanking so badly in 2008-2009, and we were (and still are, I might add) feeling lucky to have jobs, our CEO reminded us that the buzz phrase was “the reward for hard work is more hard work.” At Letizia Mass Media® we all wear a lot of hats. From our “worker bees” (without whom none of us would be here) to our executive team, we balance the ball of complete chaos with efficiency and perfection on a daily – no – hourly basis. My personal favorite thing to say when someone asks me for help is, “Does now work for you?” (it usually does). And that is the best advice I can offer other paralyzed individual. Do it now. Putting it off just leads to piles of papers, loose ends and sleepless nights. Keep your task in front of you at all times (even if you have to put it aside to jump on something else for a moment). That way, you won’t forget what you are doing. NEVER put one open file on top of another open file. And when all else fails, and all you can do is sit and watch your hands shake – walk around your workplace and see who you can help. It will make both of you feel better.
