Advertising Is Not An Overnight Success!

Advertising when it comes to the media side of things goes well beyond just putting a buy or plan together.  It is more about trusting your media buyer’s knowledge and being patient to let the plan work.  We know of those clients that expect the phone to ring within seconds of their commercial airing or to see a spike in revenue within the first 2 days of a media plan running.  There are a few things one must realize as an advertiser:

1. Advertising needs time!  Most of the clients we work with are not direct response clients (CALL NOW AND YOU WILL GET 3 FREE AND FREE SHIPPING).  Advertising is not an overnight success – come morning, your showroom will not be filled to capacity because you ran a spot in the 10pm news the night before.  Like the Media Director here always likes to say, “Just because they just heard you advertising a new Sonata for X doesn’t mean they are going to get up off the couch/drive right over to spend $30,000 on a whim.”

2. The rule of thumb in advertising is that your client must see/hear the ad at least 3 times before they will react.  There are those out there that will say you need at least 6 times in this day and age due the over indulgence of advertising that the average consumer is exposed to each day.  There is also a point of irritation.  Some in the business say this comes around the fifteenth time of being exposed to your message.

3. To reach the right consumer, the one that is interested and wants your product, takes time.  Don’t have the buyer buy what you watch because most likely you are NOT the consumer for your product.  Plus, we hear patience is a virtue.

4. Consistency, Consistency, CONSISTENCY!!!  Top of mind is brand awareness!  That means when the consumer is ready to buy your product they are more likely to come to your establishment.  But if they haven’t seen/heard an ad about you in 2 months and your competitor is on every other week, your chances of earning that consumers business is far less likely.

Trust your instinct to pick a GREAT agency that hires GREAT media buyers who know what they are doing.  Be patient and let the media plan work for you, which means don’t slam on the brakes half way through because you will lose all your momentum and brand awareness.
